Meet Shawn Marie Alcott
Shawn Alcott and her family have called Bowling Green home for the past 28 years. A local attorney, Shawn’s casework and her community service have brought her close to the issues that affect our families. To take her community involvement a step further, Shawn is running for the Kentucky Supreme Court in District 2.
Shawn Alcott is familiar with the regional challenges that stem from healthcare, unchecked crime, business, education, and the issues that impact our elected officials. She is a shareholder in the Kerrick Bachert law firm and has handled numerous jury trials and appeals during the course of her career. She has also been active in the local school community and is Chair of the Bowling Green Junior High Youth Services Council.
Shawn Alcott’s current practice concentrates on health care law, but she has also advised several city and county governments. Shawn served as an Assistant Warren County Attorney before joining her current firm. She also clerked for the Honorable Joseph R. Huddleston of the Kentucky Court of Appeals after law school.
WORK BACKGROUND
Shawn Alcott grew up in Central City, Kentucky with her parents, Dr. Wayne and Sheri Rosso, and younger sister, Lisa. Shawn worked at her family business, SMR Engineering & Environmental Services, throughout high school and graduated second in her class. Shawn obtained her bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University and subsequently attended the University of Kentucky College of Law. Shawn was a member of the UK Women’s Law Caucus and a Business Manager of the Kentucky Law Journal.
Upon graduation, Shawn clerked for the Honorable Joseph R. Huddleston of the Court of Appeals. Shawn then served as an Assistant Warren County Attorney where she: (1) prosecuted misdemeanor criminal offenses, (2) prosecuted dependent, abuse and neglect cases in the juvenile court, (3) enforced child support and (4) advised the Warren Fiscal Court.
During her service to the Warren Fiscal Court, Shawn advised the county on a variety of matters including franchising the collection of solid waste and recyclable material in Bowling Green. She entered into private practice, but continued to help Warren County navigate these issues. Shawn ultimately guided county leaders through franchisee processes that resulted in countywide solid waste and recycling franchises.
Shawn’s current practice with Kerrick Bachert concentrates on health care law and the representation of hospitals, clinics, physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals in central and southcentral Kentucky. Her practice also includes representation of individuals, businesses, a local water district, and several city and county governments.
FAMILY LIFE
Shawn Alcott met her husband and fellow attorney, Mark Alcott, while in law school. Mark has called Warren County home since 1977 and is a managing partner with the firm of Harlin Parker. Mark served as Bowling Green City Commissioner (2003) and currently serves his alma mater, Western Kentucky University, as a member of the Ogden College Advisory Board and recent Dean Search Committee. Shawn and Mark have three children: Bella (18), Finn (16) and Lilah (14).
When her children began school at W.R. McNeill Elementary School, Shawn Alcott was a regular volunteer in the classroom. Shawn’s children are a little older now, so she continues to volunteer with the school district as the current Chair of the Bowling Green Junior High Youth Services Council. Shawn is also involved with the Bowling Green Independent School District’s Comprehensive District Improvement Planning Committee.
Shawn has served on the board of directors for various community organizations including Girls, Inc. and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Shawn has also served as a classroom volunteer with Junior Achievement of Southcentral Kentucky and she participated in the 1998 Leadership Bowling Green program.
Shawn has served as a member of the deacon body of First Baptist Church of Bowling Green and more recently served as a member of the Minister of Children’s Search Team. She also frequently serves in the children’s department. Like Shawn, Mark is an active member and currently serves as a member of the deacon body, a Sunday school teacher and moderator of the church.
As a family, the Alcotts enjoy hiking, traveling and playing with their two Boykin Spaniels and one terrific cat.
